ASHLAND - Barbara Elizabeth Rice, 61, of Ashland, passed away July 16, 2014, in King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
She was born Nov. 10, 1952, in Louisa, to the late Judge Edwin D. Rice and Ann Stephenson Rice. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Rice and James Edwin Rice.
Barbara was a graduate of Morehead State University and had a master's degree in library science. She was retired and formerly the librarian at Summit Elementary School. She was a member of the Boyd County Retired Teachers Association, the Kentucky Education Association and the National Education Association.
She is survived by sisters-in-law Dana Johnson Rice of Flatwoods and Mrs. Cathy Rice of Grayson; an uncle, William P. (Sherry) Stephenson of Huntington, W.Va.; an aunt, Jean (Philip) Modlin of Zoar, Va., formerly of Huntington; nieces Elizabeth (Brian) Fields of Missouri, Mary Rice of Lexington and Julianna Rice of Flatwoods; cousins Emilene Mayhew of Louisville, Vicki Brightwell of Louisville, Barbara Good of Charleston, W.Va., Dr. Joan Prasse of Zoar, Judy Kenaston of Beckley, W.Va., and Jane Modlin of Chesapeake, Ohio; and special friends Clyde Miles, Joan Arnett and family, Donnie Patrick, Mrs. Carla Schmock, Carol Spence and Tony Traugett.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2014, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by Pastor Leo Burrell of Huntington. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
Visitation will be after noon Monday, July 21, 2014, at the funeral home.
