Charles W. "Chuck" Wessel, 85, of Ashland, passed away Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, with his loving family at his side. Mr. Wessel was born Dec. 1, 1931, in Ashland, a son of the late Fred Sr. and Dora Kouns Wessel. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Fred Wessel Jr. and Bob Wessel; two sisters, Martha McComas and Margie Ott; and his grandson, Patrick Renzi. Mr. Wessel attended Second Freewill Baptist Church in Ashland. He was a past member of Poage Masonic Lodge 325 F&AM. He was a Kentucky colonel and a member of Marine Corp League of Boyd and Greenup Counties. He had a tremendous kind spirit and was a longtime volunteer at King's Daughters Medical Center and Red Cross in Ashland. He worked with Meals on Wheels program and many other local civic programs. Mr. Wessel served his country proudly during the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Wessel retired from Ashland Oil Refinery with more than 40 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Mary Weaver Wessel of Ashland; a son, Mark Wessel and wife Amy of Ashland; three daughters, Debra Wessel Rogers and husband James of Ashland, Pamela Wessel Pore and husband Pete of Lloyd and Jo Ann Wessel Renzi and husband William of Russell; nine grandchildren, Adam Rogers, Jarred Rogers, Steven Rogers, Erica Renzi, Heather Sellars, Chris Estep, Kyle Wessel, Noah Wessel and Hayden Wessel; ten great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017, at Steen Funeral Home - 13th. Street Chapel in Ashland with Chaplain Jimm Smedley officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park with full military rites. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
