Glen Pinkerton - 1923-2008
Glen Pinkerton was born in Argillite, Ky., Aug. 26, 1923, a son of the late William B. Pinkerton and Bertha Young Pinkerton.
He was a member of Cannonsburg Church of the Nazarene and Disabled American Veterans and formerly served on the Board of Directors for Southern States Cooperative. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was transferred to the Military Police Unit of the U.S. Air Force after being wounded in action. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, European Campaign Medal, Combat Medical Badge and World War II Victory Medal.
In 1985, he retired from Armco Steel with 38 years service and was a Kentucky colonel. He enjoyed any activity related to farm life and his hobby was raising beef cattle. When he was able to be outside, he delighted in waving at everyone who passed in a vehicle and was known as a friendly man. He was saved as a young man and attended church regularly until his health began to fail. In recent years his way to worship was listening to TV ministries. A proper Scripture for him is found in John 14: 2-4: "In our Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for You. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."
He was the husband of Mary Salyers Pinkerton. They had one son, Richard Pinkerton, and raised a special niece who is like a daughter, Sandy Riley. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a loving granddaughter, Colleen Pinkerton; two brothers and three sisters.
Surviving to mourn his passing are his wife of 61 years; his son, Richard (Donna); his special niece, Sandy Riley (Roger), all of Ashland; four brothers, Clyde Pinkerton of Wurtland, Donald of Ashland, Ray of Ironton, Ohio, and Robert of Catlettsburg; two sisters, Celia Saunders of Atlanta, Ga., and Myrtle Whildin of Millville, N.J.; one grandson, Doug Pinkerton and a very precious great-grandson, Joshua Pinkerton, both of Ashland; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by Pastors Donnie McKenzie and Jason Porter. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 22, at the funeral home.
Military graveside services will be by Ceredo-Kenova American Legion Post 93.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Glen's name to the Cannonsburg Church of the Nazarene Building Fund, 13500 Copley Road, Ashland, KY 41102.
