Helen Barber (1915-2010)
Helen Louise Enke Barber, 94, of Westwood, passed away Saturday morning, Feb. 20, 2010, in Boyd County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Friday, April 2, 1915, in Pollard, Ashland, Ky., to the late Robert H. Enke and Anna McIntosh Enke Williams.
She was a housewife and a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Ashland, a charter member of the Ashland Area Lions Club, a charter member and past president of the Westwood Woman's Club, past president of the Bellefonte Homemakers Club and a member of the Boyd County Homemakers. She was a Gray Lady of the American Red Cross Boyd County Chapter and the Veterans Administration in Huntington, W.Va., a volunteer at King's Daughters Medical Center with more than 2,500 hours of service, a member of the Rebecca Winter Genealogical Society and a Kentucky colonel.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Phillip Barber, in January 2002; three brothers, Robert G., William K. and John B. Enke; and a great-grandson, William Christian Barber.
She is survived by two sons, Phillip Robert (Darlynn Church) Barber II and James Michael (Dorothy McGuire) Barber, both of Ashland; six grandchildren, Phillip R. (Tammy Davis) Barber III, Lisa Robin Barber Callihan, James Michael (Jamie Brandenburg) Barber, John Christopher (Soyon Kim) Barber, David Bryce Barber and Bryan Kendall Barber; 14 great-grandchildren, Shirah Kristen Callihan, Miriam Rochelle Callihan, Ashley Brooke Barber, Phillip Robert Barber IV, Joshua David Barber, David Bryce Barber, Alex Benjamin Barber, Michael Jared Barber, James Derek Barber, John Enke Barber, James Kendall Barber, Joseph Yungkil Barber and Daniel Elijah Barber; and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by the Rev. Blanchard Amstutz. Interment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today and an hour before services Tuesday at the funeral home.
