Janice Shanks

Janice Lee Patrick Shanks, 76, of Ashland, passed away Saturday Jan. 12, 2013, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 28, 1936, in Ashland, the daughter of the late Claud and Lora Sparks Patrick. She was also preceded in death by her only sister, Betty Jo Patrick.

She was a 1954 graduate of Ashland Senior High School and loved her classmates.

She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, William E. Shanks. She was a devoted mother to a daughter, Kathy Lynn Shanks of Woodstock, Ga.; two sons, David Alan Shanks of Dublin, Ohio, and Brian Shanks and wife Olivia of Mobile, Ala.; five adorable grandchildren, Ian Geoffrey Frazier and Evan Scott Beard of Woodstock, Kathryn Olivia Shanks, Caroline Chancy Shanks and Andrew William Shanks of Mobile; and many close friends.

She was a member of South Ashland United Methodist Church for 50 years, having been saved in 1965. She was a member of the Bible Sunday school class, the Circle of Love and the Hospitality Committee. She was a Kentucky colonel and a member of the Boyd County Homemakers Nightingale Club. She was retired from King's Daughters Medical Center with 27 years of service.

A celebration of her life will be at noon Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at South Ashland United Methodist Church by the Rev. Lance Campbell. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum in Ashland.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland and after 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to South Ashland United Methodist Church, 2203 29th St., Ashland KY 41101.
