John Ross Wellman, 86, of Catlettsburg, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, left this Earth on Monday, March 16, 2015, in King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, surrounded by his loving children and loved ones, following a brief illness.

He was born Aug. 11, 1928, in Dingess, W.Va., to the late Anderson and Lucy Kibbey Wellman. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Evelyn Mounts Wellman, and a son, Danny Wellman.

Ross was a member of Catlettsburg Church of God. He and his late wife raised their children in church and instilled within them wonderful Christian values they carry with them to this day. What a great legacy he has left them.

Earlier in his life, he proudly served as constable of Mingo County, W.Va. He retired after many years of service as a mine foreman at Eastern Coal Co.

Those left to cherish his memory include nine children, Frank and Becky Simpson, Darlene and Ronnie Howell, Vicky Wellman Hall, Linda Wellman Kelly, Greg (Lynn Butler) Wellman, Susan and Ron Lykins, Sandra and Denver Jones, Joni and Carl Pursley and Rossi and Corey Rodkey; and many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 19, 2015, at Catlettsburg Church of God by Pastor Rick Shelby and Pastor Greg Wirzfeld. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum in Ashland. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, March 18, 2015, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland.
