Keith Self (1958-2009)
Keith Self, 51, of Ashland, was lifted by angels and carried to his home in Heaven on Dec. 20, 2009, in KDMC after a courageous 20 month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Keith was born Oct. 31, 1958, to Geneva Hall Bentley in Detroit, Mich. In 1975, Keith relocated to the Boyd County area and graduated from Boyd County High School.
Keith was employed by CSX Railroad for 10 years. In 1991, he incorporated Quality First Services, Inc., a commercial janitorial service specializing in tile floor work. The business grew over the years and expanded to KY, OH & WV, attributed directly to Keith's hard work ethic, dependability and reputation. From 1993 to 1997, Keith owned and operated 29th Street Pantry and Videos, Inc. where he enjoyed interaction with many friends old and new.
Keith is survived by his wife, Lynn Adkins Self; a son, Eric Keith Self and his fiancée, Lauren Rutt; a son by marriage, Christian Layne Wheeler, at home and a daughter, Brooke Christian Self of Ashland. In addition to his mother, he is also survived by a sister, Patricia (Ron) Warren of Warren, Mich.; a brother, Mike Bentley of St. Clair Shores, Mich.; a brother, Butch (Emily) Bentley of Hartford, Mich.; nieces, Jamie Tadros, Kimberly Bernureter, Jennifer Williams and Vernece Hollon; three nephews, Jo Vitale, Dion Bentley and Jason Bentley; three great-nieces and two great-nephews and a special friend, Gene Fuller.
Keith was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Whitni Amber Self in 2005 and brothers, Joey Lee Bentley in 1995 and Gregory Lynn Bentley in 1960.
Keith was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and the Elks Lodge and coached Ashland American Little League and Ashland Babe Ruth.
Keith had a passion for sports particularly softball. He played on Mr. Gene's softball team from 1978 until 1992 and participated in numerous tournaments throughout the state of Kentucky. He participated in the Ashland YMCA Summer and Fall Leagues, Worthington Fall League, Elks Post 350 and Russell YMCA Basketball League. Keith was also a member of several local bowling leagues. In addition to sports, Keith enjoyed horse racing and renovation properties.
