Nathaniel Slone, Jr., 86, of Cannonsburg, died peacefully, Monday, January 07, 2019 at his residence.
Nathaniel was born August 18, 1932, in Pike County, Kentucky, a son of the late Nathaniel Slone, Sr. and Fannie Justice Slone. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Geneva Mae Justice Slone on December 20, 2017; and two brothers, James Blackburn and Winfield Blackburn.
He was a member of Beech Street Christian Church and the Boyd County Retired Teachers Association. He joined the United States Marine Corps at age 16 and served honorably from August 24, 1949 until November 28, 1952 as a Corporal during the Korean War where he received a Purple Heart.
Following his time in service he completed high school and graduated from Pikeville College. He went on to receive his master’s degree from Morehead State University.
He retired from Boyd County High School after a 30 year teaching career.
Survivors include his daughter, Paula Slone Burdette of Cannonsburg; two grandchildren, Matthew Burdette of Cannonsburg, and Julie Burdette of Dunbar, W.Va; brothers, Paul B. Slone of Canton, GA, and Ray Blackburn of Pikeville; sisters, Patty Justice of Canada, KY, and Kay Murphy of Sidney, KY.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, January 11, 2018, at Steen Funeral Home 13th Street Chapel with Minister Kenneth Vaughn officiating. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
