Richard Gardner Jr

Richard Dewitt Gardner Jr., 88, of Gravel Road in Morehead, formerly of Russell, passed away Monday, April 15, 2013, in Thomson-Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore.

He was born Aug. 4, 1924, in Ashland, a son of the late Richard Dewitt Gardner Sr. and the late Mary Annie Easley Gardner.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Georgene Webb Gardner, on Oct. 23, 2010; an infant son, Gilbert Gardner; and a sister, Ruth Withrow.

Mr. Gardner is survived by four daughters, Genie Ann Gardner of Carthage, Mo., Cindy Rowland of Morehead, Mary Turner of Flatwoods and Beth Patrick of Morehead; a sister, Virginia Ann Gardner of Ashland; a brother, Robert Gardner of Laurinburg, N.C.; a special niece, Sandy Hunter of Morehead; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was a World War II Army veteran and former employee of Armco who also owned and operated an automotive repair business for many years. He was a published author and poet as well as a skilled dulcimer and fiddle maker.

A private graveside service will be at Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland by Brother Tim Rhodes. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 18, 2013, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to a favorite charity.
