ASHLAND - Norman Edward Stemmer, 86, of Ashland, husband of Betty Brown Stemmer, passed away Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Norm was born Feb. 8, 1926, in Boyd County, a son of the late Charles Lester and Margaret Sweeney Stemmer.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was retired as a foreman in the basic oxygen department of Armco-AK Steel, a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Fred M Gross Lodge 953, Indra Consistory Valley of Covington Scottish Rite, El Hasa Shrine Oriental Band, Elks Lodge 350 BPOE and American Legion Clarence Fields Post 76.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Kevin Stemmer; three brothers, Charles Stemmer, Harry "Tot" Stemmer and Paul Stemmer; and two sisters, Helen Fallon and Marie Greene.

Norm is survived by his loving wife, Betty Brown Stemmer of Ashland; two sons, Christopher (Sarah) Stemmer of Nashville, Tenn., and Terry Stemmer of Lexington; one stepson, Ben (Robin) Millard of Westwood; one stepdaughter, Kathy (Mike) Davis of Rush; six grandchildren, Kristen Arthur, Melisa Goodall, Amanda Millard, Megan Davis, Brent Davis and Brennon Davis; four great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, by the Rev. Ivan Asbury and David Crace at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood. Entombment will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum. Military Service will be conducted by American Legion Post 93 of Kenova, W.Va.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today and one hour before the services Monday at the funeral home. Scottish Rite Services will be conducted at 7:45 p.m. by members and brothers of Ashland-Russell Scottish Rite Club. Masonic Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. by officers and members of Fred M Gross Lodge 953 F&AM.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Norman's memory may be made to Community Hospice Care Center, 2330 Pollard Road, Ashland, KY 41101.
